BIO4WATERS :

Water purification has largely developed in the past century. Drinking water disinfection has decreased the number of outbreaks of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and typhoid. The larger part of pathogenic micro-organisms is removed by means of water treatment techniques, such as coagulation, flocculation, settling and filtration. To increase drinking water safety, disinfection is applied as a final treatment step.

Bio4Waters - and treatment of water

  • Adequate waste water treatment can make the disinfection of drinking water more efficient. When waste water treatment is insufficient, water that is polluted with all kinds of pathogenic microorganisms and chemical pollutants will end up in the environment. This negatively influences the environment, mainly surface water quality. Surface water is used for the production of drinking water.
  • Prevention and removal of biofilm (layer of slime containing pathogens) in tanks and pipes.
  • Disinfection of water in swimming pools and cooling towers.
  • Treatment of process water in wet sorting facilities for fruits: After rinsing the fruits are sorted, transported and packed, using water. However, this process water is contaminated with all kinds of micro-organisms from the fruits as well as with residues of pesticides used shortly before harvest.
  • Treatment of water in irrigation water tanks: For crops it is important that the irrigation water is as clean as possible. Therefore, algae, growing in irrigation tanks needs to be eliminated as much as possible, because they are a breeding ground for bacteria.

Changes in the world economy over the passed decades have led to an opening up of international markets, resulting in an increase in the volume of transport involving fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants. It has become more challenging to transport and store these perishable goods without unnecessary loss of quality. Controlled temperature transport and cold storage are good tools, but these often prove not to be sufficient.

Refrigeration can slow or even stop the growth of certain pathogens and micro-organisms that cause decay, but will not eliminate them. It is generally recognized that storing food at 5°C is sufficient to prevent the growth of most common food-borne pathogens. However, some emerging psychrotrophic pathogens (bacteria that are capable of surviving or even thriving in a cold environment) such as Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica, Clostridum botulinum types A and E, Aeromonas hydrophyla, (entero-toxigenic), and E. coli are able to multiply slowly in refrigerated foods. And since psychro-trophic pathogens might eventually prevail, additional factors in the preservation system are needed for safety assurance.

Regular transit of agricultural and horticultural products between countries has compelled national health authorities to strengthen preventive measures to combat diseases. Cleaning and disinfection are two of the most important elements in such measures. All transport and storage facilities for agricultural and horticultural produce are a potential risk in the spread of a disease.
